Early Morning Harvest News & Updates – February 9, 2016

early morning harvest news letter organic produce, iowa
Hi all,

Our tomato plants are holding on, still very green but not putting on many flowers or fruit. Last year about this time we went several weeks without a lettuce harvest, this year we’ve only missed one week and that was due to a late shipment of grow cubes. We have snap peas coming on soon, radishes growing slowly, carrots coming up behind the radishes, and cabbage taking its sweet time forming heads. Toscano kale has been transplanted to replace the blue dwarf kale, but we need more sun. Pepper plants are their usual sad selves this time of year; I think those beds will be for snap peas next year.

Our outside garden plan is nearly finished and we’ll be ordering seeds soon. We hope to have another intern from Iowa State this year, and we’re happy to hear any and all input and advice to help us serve the community better. Last summer, I (Andrew) spent far too much time washing vegetables and greens and not enough time in the garden growing them. I plan on reversing that this year so we can deliver higher quality fresh vegetables and greens to everyone.

Is there anything you would like to see us grow outside this year? Is there anything you would like us to provide over the winter next year?

A big thank you to all of our regular, and not-so-regular but still loyal customers. You all make it possible to continue the crazy thing called a “small business.”
