On Friday, January 19, the Practical Farmers of Iowa presented to Earl Hafner the 2018 Sustainable Agriculture Achievement Award in a ceremony during their annual conference in Ames. The recipient of the award is someone who has gone above and beyond in his or her dedication to sustainable agriculture, as well as being instrumental in promoting diversity in farming and healthy food through sharing his or her expertise with others. You can read the original press release on the Practical Farmers of Iowa website.

Earl’s diverse farming practices are used at Early Morning Harvest, where he farms with his son, Jeff, and at Hafner, Inc. in Panora, Iowa. He prides himself on using non-synthetic chemicals and being a source of organic produce and grains. His operations also include free-range chicken eggs, grass-fed beef, live tilapia using an aquaponics system, as well as their own honey, cereal and granolas.

Sustainable farming incorporates such practices as extended crop rotation and cover crops to keep the soil healthy. Sustainability in farming means the farm is able to consistently pay for itself by producing ample, wholesome product as well as promoting good land stewardship.

Be sure to congratulate Earl on this distinguished achievement!
